Joseph was born at Berne in January of 1847, a son of Horace Northrup and Jane Ann McNary (1821-1849). He was a grandson of Martin A. McNary and Betsey Cary.

He married at about 1883, Jennie Stalker who was born in New York in October of 1861. They had one child, Margaret Northrup, who was born in May of 1884. They lived in Westerlo.

Joseph died on September 12, 1921 at Clarksville, Albany Co., NY [3]and was buried at the Onesquesthaw Cemetery at Clarksville, Albany Co., NY. His marker there is inscribed with his wife's name and date of birth, but does not show her date of death.
