Birth
James H. Hammond was born about 1842 in Berne to James Hammond (B. July 23, 1795, D. Mar 11, 1859) and Catherine Gifford (B. Aug 15, 1809, D. Sept 4, 1878).[1] He was the oldest of five children.[1]

Death
While serving in Company I, 76th Infantry Regiment New York on 1 Jul 1863, he was killed at Gettysburg, PA.[4] He was buried there in what is today known as the Gettysburg National Cemetery.[1]
