Life
Until his marriage, Dewitt lived with his parents and siblings and worked with his father as a farmer.[3] [4]
After his marriage to Melinda, he continued to live in Berne and support his family as a farmer.[5] In 1880 his father Joseph was living with Dewitt and his young family.[5]
By 1890, Dewitt had moved his family to Seattle, King County, Washington where he was working as a NPRR switchman.[6] He continued to live there for the remainder of his life. In 1900, the family was recorded as living in Ward 3 of Seattle on 31st Avenue where Dewitt owned his home mortgage free.[2] At that time, he was unemployed and supported by his son Oaks who was a letter carrier.[2] A decade later in 1910, his son Oaks had married and had a young daughter, and they settled in a house near Dewitt and his wife in Seattle.[7] Dewitt was working as a laborer and he still owned his house mortgage free.[7] The same was true in 1920 however at age 72, Dewitt no longer had a job.[9]

Dewitt Clinton Shultes died on February 15, 1923 at Seattle, Kings Co., WA. His place of burial is not included on the form below. His wife, Melinda, died on April 7, 1943 and no burial location is provided for her.
