Little is known about Michael Smith, however he was born in about 1838. His birthplace has been recorded as Albany County[1], New York[2][3] and Ireland[4][5]. His parents are unknown, but it appears that he was related to Josephine Smith Wilson, the daughter of Jacob Smith (B. 1825, D. Life

In 1855 at the age of about 19, Michael Smith was working as a servant and living with Polly Ryan, who was a maid, in Berne.[1] He continued to live with her in 1860.[2] In 1865 he was living with Mary Ryan, presumably Mary and Polly are the same person or they are related. In this census Michael is reported as a naturalized citizen who was born in Ireland, a farmer who owned his own land and currently serving in the army.[4] In 1870 he was again living with Mary Ryan in Berne and he was working as a farm laborer.[5] By 1880 he was living in his own place in Berne, with a woman named Hannah and he was a farmer.[3]

Death

Michael Smith died on November 17, 1899.[11] He was granted his pension for his Civil War service on July 5, 1890. He did not appear on the 1890 Veterans Schedule or the 1892 NY State census in Berne.
