Joan served an apprenticeship in a millinery shop. She worked for many years for the former Ma Bell, currently AT&T, in Schenectady until her retirement in 1986. She was the former secretary of the Capital District Genealogical Society and had many interests, including: quilting, knitting, sewing, playing tennis and ocean fishing. She raised German Shepherds and was a skilled photographer, winning several awards in local photography contests.

Military

Joan M. Hollands proudly entered the British Army where she served 4 years. During her military service, she met and married World War II veteran, Edwin W. Ar-nold. They returned to the United States where she was titled by the Schenectady Gazette as the "First English War Bride in Schenectady".

DELANSON Joan Margaret (nee: Hollands) Arnold, 88, of Delanson passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, February 5, 2011 with her family by her side. Born in Lewisham, England on September 10, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Margaret (nee: Walton) Hollands. She was raised and educated in London. Following her formal education, Joan served an apprenticeship in a millinery shop. Joan proudly entered the British Army where she served 4 years. During her military service, she met and married World War II veteran, Edwin W. Arnold. They returned to the United States where she was titled by the Schenectady Gazette as the "First English War Bride in Schenectady". She worked for many years for the former Ma Bell, currently AT&T, in Schenectady until her retirement in 1986. She was the former secretary of the Capital District Genealogical Society and had many interests, including: quilting, knitting, sewing, playing tennis and ocean fishing. She raised German Shepherds and was a skilled photographer, winning several awards in local photography contests. Married on May 13, 1944, Joan was predeceased by her husband, Edwin W. Arnold on August 22, 2009. She was also predeceased by a grandson, James Golden, Jr. She is survived by her loving daughters, Fay and Diana Arnold, both of Delanson; her brother, Thomas (Patricia) Hollands of Deptford, England; four grandchildren, Dean (Christye) Sisson, Scott (Mary) Sisson, Paul (Ellen) Golden and Sean (Tricia) Golden; eight great-grandchildren, Victoria, Tyler, Nicholas, Mackenzie, Benjamin, Maximo, Evelyn and Sean Daniel; her brother-in-law, Paul (Sandy) Abrams of Niskayuna; sisters-in-law, Helen Boyling of Guilderland and Betty Treis of Duanesburg; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday from 4 until 7 p.m. at Griswold Funeral Home, 1867 State St., Schenectady. Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be held in the spring at Knox Cemetery, Knox, NY.
