Birth
Charles B. Bogardus was born on May 6, 1839 in Berne[1] to John I. Bogardus (B. June 7, 1805, D. June 8, 1880) and Mary E. Schultes (B. Mar 22, 1809, D. May 27, 1895).[2][3] He was the middle child of seven.[2] He had a younger brother William H. Bogardus.[1]

His younger brother William H. Bogardus, who was in Company M of the 7th HA Regt, was missing in action the same day as Charles was killed. Some sources report that he was heard from again[1] and others that he was captured and died in prison. Death
Charles was killed instantly on June 3, 1864 at Cold Harbor, Va. when he was shot through the head.[1] He was buried there.[3] His brother William H. Bogardus was reported missing in action the same day.[1]
