Ward, Walter E.
Birth
Walter E. Ward was born on December 5, 1853 in Westerlo to the Rev. Gilbert Ward and Emeline Garrett. His mother had been born in New Baltimore, Greene Co, NY. His grandfather was Gilbert Ward, a pioneer farmer in Westerlo.
Education
Walter was educated in local Westerlo public schools during the winter as he worked on his father's farm in the summer. At 17 years of age, he went to the Collegiate Institute in Claverack and was taught be Reverend Alonzo Flack. To pay for his education, he worked part time as a teacher. In 1873, he entered Wesleyan University where he graduated in 1877 with honors. He then moved to Albany where he attended Albany Law School and read law with the firm of Hungerford and Hotaling there.
Occupation
At the age of 17 years, he worked part time as a teacher in the Claverack area while he attended Collegiate Institute. After he graduated from Wesleyan, he privately taught Latin and Greek while attending Albany Law School. When he was admitted to the Bar, he practiced law in Albany. He went into a partnership with Frederick W. Cameron and the firm was called Ward and Cameron. Walter specialized in patent law.
Marriage & Children
In 1881, he married Carrie Stanton of Westerlo, who was the daughter of Luman Stanton. They had three children; Maude E. Ward, Florence Ward, and Walter J. Ward.
Religion
He continued to follow his father's Methodist leanings and attended Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church in Albany.
Life
He lived at 1024 Madison Avenue in the city of Albany.
