Birth

Sylvanus was born in January of 1757 at Middleboro, Plymouth, MA, a son of Hezekiah Purrington and Mercy Bates. His known siblings:

Military

He enlisted as a private in the 3rd Continental Infantry in Colonel Larnard’s Regiment, under the command of Captain Isaac Wood (presumably) at Marlboro, MA in December of 1775. He participated in the Battle of Princetown, marched further to East Chester, and was discharged at Trenton in January of 1777.

Marriage & Children

When or where he married is unknown. His pension file indicates that when he filed, his wife’s name was Nancy and she was born at about 1758. He had two children in his household at that time. Their names were:

  • Sally Purrington born at about 1799
  • Miranda Purrington born at about 1802. She married a Tuttle

His first pension filing was in 1818. At that time he was a resident of Broome, Schoharie Co., NY. He gave affidavits for pension applications for others in the 1830’s and was living in Rensselaerville. In 1840 he was living in Rensselaerville. His place of death was likely Rensselaerville.
