Education

Charles was educated in the local schools and attended school through the age of 17.[8]

Occupation

Life

Charles was found living with his parents and siblings in Westerlo in 1850 where his father was a farmer.[2] Later that decade they moved to North Hill, Durham Twp, Greene County, NY where the family was recorded in the 1860 Census.[8] At that time Edward Cole was working as a farm laborer as were his sons; Edgar Cole, Ransom Cole, James H. Cole and Charles.[8] On August 18, 1880, Charles filed for his Civil War pension.[4] In 1890 Charles was living in South Westerlo, specifically Dormansville, where he was recorded in the 1890 US Veterans Census. At that time, it was recorded that he suffered from a "ruptured right side". In 1900 he was living in Westerlo with his wife Anna E. and stepchildren: Jay G. Ives, Alma E. Ives, and Eva Ives.[1] At the time Charles was working as a farm laborer and he owned a mortgaged house.[1] By 1910, Charles and Anna were living alone in Westerlo and Charles, who owned his house without a mortgage, was working as a farm laborer.[3] This census confirms that both Charles and Anna had been married two times.[3] In early October of 1912 Charles was visited by his sisters Mrs. Conger and Mrs. McCulloch.[9] In 1920 Charles, who was still working at the age of 72, was living with Anna in Westerlo.[10] Anna's health began to fail first and she was apparently an invalid for many years before her death.[11] In early September of 1923, Charles and Anna were visited by her grandaughter Mrs. Clarence Ross of South Shaftsburg, Vt.[12] For Christmas 1923, their daughter Mrs. Noah Lobdell of Norton Hill visited for the holiday.[13] Charles, who had previously been in good health, fell ill in early 1924 and on Febuary 1st, Dr. Charles McCabe was called to the home to care for him.[14] From this point on his health deteriorated. In April of 1924 he was reported to be in "very poor health".[15] In late July, Mr. W. F. Post visited his sister, Anna.[5]

Death

Charles Cole died on Wednesday August 13, 1924.[16][11] His funeral was held on Aug 17th at 2 o'clock and he was buried at the Hannacroix Rural Cemetery.[11] His wife Anna filed for his Civil War pension on September 3, 1924.[4]
