Life
Albert C. Hale lived for most of his life in Westerlo. His parentage and details of his childhood are unknown, however by 1860 he was living in Westerlo and working at the age of 16 as a farm laborer for Aison Winegard, a farmer. Albert served in the Civil War two times, the first in 1862 and 1863 in the 177th Infantry Regiment of NY. Then he re-enlisted about a year later in the 3rd Cavalry Regiment and this second time he was captured by the Confederacy and held in the Salsbury Prison for 5 months. He survived the ordeal and mustered out June 7, 1865. Very shortly after returning home, he married and started a family. In 1870 he can be found living in Westerlo with his young wife and children and working as a day laborer.[5] He could not be found in 1880 US Census, but was recorded in the 1890 US Veterans Census in Westerlo. In the late 1880s, Albert's health began to decline and he filed for an invalid pension on May 3, 1888. However despite these health issues, he was to live for many more years. In 1900, he and his wife were living alone in the house they owned in Westerlo and he was working as a farm laborer.[2] Ten years later in 1910 they were living in the same situation.[4]
Death
Albert C. Hale lived a long life for a prisoner of war in the Civil War. He died on February 25, 1916 at Albany, NY.[9]
