Bernard was born November 7, 1828, to Francis Hurst, Jr. (son of Francis Hurst) and Christina Near. He was christened on December 28, 1828.

Bernard died on July 9, 1899, in New Scotland, Albany Co., NY. He was buried in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Guilderland, NY July 12, 1899.
