Birth

Israel was born at about 1753 in Westchester County, NY[1]

Military

He enlisted as a Private in March of 1776 at Salem, Westchester County in Captain Delavan’s Company and served one month. He enlisted again several months later in 1776 and served six months in Colonel Thomas’s Regiment and was in the battle of White Plains. He continued to serve until the close of the war in various short tours and at one time served in Captain John Drake and Lieutenant Lockwood. When Bedford was burned, he was there under Colonel Thomas[1].

Marriage & Children

Israel married at about 1774 but the name of his wife doesn’t appear on available documents. The known heirs surviving him in 1838 were:

  • Phebe Wood b. at about 1782, married in 1804, William R. Swart[2]
  • Rebecca Wood b. about 1784, married Cornelius Witbeck[2]
  • Ruth Wood b. in 1786, married Peter Gedney[2]
  • Israel Wood, Jr. b. about 1793[2]
  • John Wood b. 1797[2]
  • Joseph Wood b. about 1807[2]
  • Cornelius Wood b. about 1809[2]named as his son
  • Thomas Wood b. 1810[2]named as his son
  • Huldah Wood b. about 1819[2]named as his daughter

If these, other than those named in his will as his children, were his children, he was likely married several times.

Death

Israel died sometime between February 2, 1832 and March 9, 1838
