Birth
Ivan Velmore Tallman was born on March 20, 1888, in Livingstonville, N.Y., the only child of Merritt William Tallman and Jannis E. Eldridge. In 1900, Ivan lived in Broome, Schoharie County, and then by 1910 had moved with his parents to Westerlo.
Occupation
Ivan was a teacher, and in 1908 was teaching at the Union Free School in Rensselaerville. He also taught at the accounting at the Butler Business School in Bridgeport, Fairfield Co., N.Y. He was also a Telegrapher for the railroad and an agent for an insurance company.
Marriage & Children
On June 19, 1915, Ivan married Blanche Steplen, in Bridgeport and then they moved back to New York. They had two children:
- Donald Velmore Tallman
- Lois Agnes Tallman
Death
Ivan caught the flu during the Influenza epidemic of 1918. He suffered a very high fever and afterwards had bouts of amnesia. During these bouts, he would wander off sometimes for months. It was during the last such episode that he ended up in Dunkirk, Chautauqna Co., NY on June 14, 1931, where he was hit by a car driven by the son of a local banker. He didn't have any identification on him and it took some time before the authorities were able to identify him to make a family notification. He was 43 years old at the time of his death and is buried in South Westerlo in Westerlo Central Cemetery.
