Birth
Harriet E. Haverly was born Aug. 6 1844 in Berne, NY. Her parents were Eli Haverly, a carpenter, and Elizabeth Schermerhorn. Elizabeth had two daughters-Mary born 1843 and Harriet born 1844. Elizabeth died in 1845 at 26 years of age. Eli then married Mary Rebecca Martin. Mary's children were Amanda, Edward, Nina and Mabel.
Education
Harriet was educated in the local school.
Occupation
Harriet was a home maker.
Marriage & Children
Harriet married Luther Miller September 29 1864, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Berne NY. He was the son of John Miller and Elizabeth Potter of Wright Township. Harriet and Luther had four children;
- Minnie E. Miller - died of consumption December 28, 1883 at age 17.
- Ella Miller
- John Miller
- Claude Miller
The first three children were born on the farm on Larry Hill near Gallupville NY. Claude was born in Berne on the farm on Irish Hill.
The family lived on Larry Hill near Gallupville a number of years On the 1870 census the family was living in Wright Township and on the 1880 census the family was living in Berne Township. During this time they had moved to the farm near the top of Irish Hill in Berne. When Luther died in 1901 Harriet sold the farm and bought a lovely home near Berne on the Berne-Altamont Road. She kept this home until her death. She cultivated a lovely old fashioned garden in her front yard that was remembered by her granddaughter, Alice Turner.
Harriet married her second husband, Sanford E. Miller December 30, 1908. He died February 27 1913. Luther and Sanford were not related.
Death
Harriet died December 27, 1931, at age 87 on the farm owned by Jay P. Turner and her daughter, Ella. When Harriet became ill in her old age she went to live with them. She was buried at Gallupville Rural Cemetery next to her first husband, Luther.
