Delos was born in 1879 in Schoharie County, NY to Harvey Bates and Luella Carpenter. He married Anna Laurie Freleigh, daughter of William Freleigh and Sarah Anna Carr about 1901. Delos was a farmer, and he and Anna raised their family of ten in Dormansville.

Delos died January 25, 1941, in Albany, NY and was buried in Hannacroix Rural Cemetery.
Obituary
Delos Bates - Funeral services for Delos Bates, 67, of Dormansville, state highway employee, who died Saturday in St. Peter's hospital will take place tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the A.J. Cunningham Funeral Home in Greenville. Burial will be in Hannacroix cemetery. A native of Schoharie county and widely know in the Dormansville section, Mr. Bates is survived by his wife: his father, Harvey Bates, Stamford; seven sons, Charles, William, Albert, George, Frederick, Alfred and Clarence Bates; two daughters, Miss Edna Bates and Mrs. Harley Hallenbeck; three brothers, Geroge, David and Claude Bates and two sisters, Mrs. William Hilleker and Mrs. Margaret Ingraham.
