He was a farmer.<ref name="Landmarks"/> He was also a shoemaker.<ref name="1850 Census">1850 Census, Knox, Albany Co., NY</ref>

==Militia==
He was a prominent and active member of the State militia, in which he took great pride and spent considerable money,being an officer in a company of cavalry. His son, [[Peter Young, Jr.]], was also a member of the militia<ref name="Landmarks"/><br>

Peter married first, Diadema <ref name="Berne History"> Berne NY Family files, www.bernehistory.org </ref> Toles <ref name="Landmarks"/>, a daughter of [[Titus Tolles]] and Mary Blakeslee<ref name="Berne History"/> at about 1800.<br> By his first wife Peter had had six sons and four daughters<ref name="Landmarks"/>

==Death==
Peter died in 1864. He was buried in Knox, presumably on his property. In 1874 his remains were removed and buried at the Prospect Hill Cemetery in Guilderland.
