Henry was born into the large family of eleven children of [[Joseph Wood]] and his wife [[Anna Thorne]].<ref name="Town and City Registers"/><ref name="Carnival"/><ref name="Bernehistory"/><ref name="1850Census"/><ref name="1855Census"/> His father had various occupations including shoemaker, Methodist Preacher and farmer, but in general the family was quite poor and they moved frequently.<ref name="USCensus">US Censuses</ref> At the time of Henry's birth in 1846 they lived in Rensselaerville, but by 1850 they were living in Broome, Schoharie county, NY.<ref name="Town and City Registers"/><ref name="1850Census"/> In 1855 the frame house that they lived in Berne, Albany county, NY was only valued at $75.<ref name="1855Census"/> They continued to live in Berne at least up until Henry's enlistment in the Civil War in February of 1864.<ref name="Carnival"/> Henry's slightly older brother [[Hiram B. Wood]] had enlisted in the 7th Heavy Artillery Regiment's Company K two years before Henry's enlistment.<ref name="Carnival"/> Henry and his brother Hiram were both captured on June 16, 1864 at Petersburg, Va.<ref name="Carnival"/> They were then both sent to Andersonville prison where Hiram died on April 19, 1865.<ref name="Carnival"/><ref name="1890Census"/> Tragedy turned when Henry was paroled less than two weeks later on April 28, 1865 at Jacksonville, Florida.<ref name="Carnival"/> He mustered out about two months later in Albany.<ref name="Carnival"/> Unfortunately little is known about what happened to Henry after his Civil War service. He was not living with his parents in Rensselaerville in 1870, however in 1880 he was living with his brother [[Orville B. Wood]] and his family in Broome, Schoharie County, NY.<ref name="1870Census">1870 US Census, Rensselaerville, Albany Co, NY</ref><ref name="1880Census">1880 US Census, Broome, Schoharie Co, NY</ref> No occupation was given for Henry, but his brother Orville was a farmer. On August 24, 1881, Henry filed for his Civil War pension.<ref name="Pension"/> He was documented in the 1890 US Veterans Census living in Middleburgh, Schoharie County, NY and reported that he had chronic diarrhea as a result of his Andersonville imprisonment.<ref name="1890Census"/> That was the last record found on Henry.
