Robert was born in New York in February of 1830, a son of John G. Westervelt and Mary Bebee.<ref name="Marriage License"> Marriage licenses recorded in Rhode Island by LDS</ref>

==Occupation===
Robert's father was an affluent doctor. Robert chose farming, and lived in many areas working on farms. Prior to the Civil War he was in Albany and found his way to Westerlo where he was working as a farm laborer for James Lobdell.

==Marriage & Children==
He married at on October 3, 1872 in Rhode Island, Jane Gill who was born in England.<ref name="Marriage License"> Marriage licenses recorded in Rhode Island by LDS</ref> They had a daughter, Elizabeth G. Westervelt born there in 1874<ref name="Birth Records"> Birth Records recorded in Rhode Island by LDS</ref>.
