Daniel Van Deusen was born circa 1838 to [[Robert C. Van Deusen]] (B. Nov 5, 1798, D. May 17, 1853) and [[Catherine Bovie]] (B. May 2, 1802, D. after 1860).<ref name="BHP">[[Berne Historical Project]]</ref> He was one of seven children and had a younger brother [[William H. Van Deusen]], who also served in the Civil War.

There is an affidavit from Wm. Flansburgh and Daniel S. Van Deusen relating to Catherine Van Deusen's pension claim which attests that she was wife [widow] of Robert Van Deusen and mother of Daniel Van Deusen. It gives assignment info and says he died at Baton Rouge, LA. Date is not given, but affidavit is Jan 1864.<ref>Rick Van Deusen</ref>
