Joel was killed in action on June 17, 1864 at Petersburg, VA.<ref name="Carnival"/> His remains were buried at Lake Rural Cemetery in East Berne.<ref name="Bernehistory"/> After his death, his mother Julia A. Secor filed for his pension benefits on April 29, 1881.<ref name="Pension"/>
