He was an Army veteran of World War II, during which he served in the Pacific Theater, and of the Korean War.

Donald died Friday, June 11, 1993, in the Veterans Affairs Medical Center Hospital, Albany, after a brief illness.

A service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 14, 1993, in the Hall & Higgins Funeral Home, 318 Main St., Stephentown, with burial in the Cemetery of the Evergreens, Lebanon Springs.

Donald Edward Schaffer, 65, of Route 20, West Lebanon, died Friday in the Veterans Affairs Medical Center Hospital, Albany, after a brief illness. He was born in Albany and attended a one-room schoolhouse in East Berne. He was an Army veteran of World War II, during which he served in the Pacific Theater, and of the Korean War. Mr. Schaffer worked for the Operating Engineers Local 106 in Albany as a heavy equipment operator, retiring in 1981 because of disability. He moved to West Lebanon in 1985. Survivors include his wife, Alice Romanowski Schaffer; a daughter, Linda Kinum of Hadley; four stepdaughters, Jackie Thomas of Lebanon Springs, Mary Cowart of Thompson, Ga., Sharon Grey of Niskayuna and Shirley Winestock of New Lebanon; a stepson, Jay Justen of Winter Springs, Fla.; two sisters, Ann Ryan of East Berne and Josephine White of Albany; four brothers, David Schaffer and Arthur Schaffer, both of Albany, Clarence Schaffer of Arizona and Floyd Schaffer of Florida; two grandchildren and three step-grandchildren. A service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Hall & Higgins Funeral Home, 318 Main St., Stephentown, with burial in the Cemetery of the Evergreens, Lebanon Springs. Calling hours will be held after noon Monday in the funeral home, before the service. Contributions may be made to the Lebanon Valley Protective Association or to the Floyd Carlton-Gerst-Williams American Legion Post, in care of the funeral home.
