John Rheinhart, his great-grandfather, was a native of Germany and immigrated to America in 1762, settling in or about New York. When the Revolutionary war broke out he enlisted and served through the whole war.

Johannes Rheinhart, the grandfather, was born in Berne on the homestead where he was a lifelong farmer and owned a farm of 113 acres. His children were Catharine, Peter, David, William and Adam.
