Johannes served in the Revolutionary War. In his application for a pension in 1820, Johannes states that his family consists of "...a wife who is infirm, a daughter 34 who has been an invalid since her infancy and unable to perform any labors. A son fourteen and a granddaughter age 5 who has lost her mother."<ref>National Archives Revolutionary War Pension Records-Microfilm Roll 683, Record Number S42235; name spelled John Rynehart</ref>
Note: His wife was Margaret, age 56; the invalid daughter was named Catherine, born 1785/86; the 14 year old son was Adam; the 5 year old granddaughter was Lydia, whose mother is thought to have died in childbirth.

His second marriage was to Margaret Dietz on Oct 23, 1783. They were married in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Schoharie. Johannes and Margaret had at least 11 children:
