Joseph was born at Berne in January of 1847, a son of Horace Northrup and Jane Ann McNary (1821-1849). He was a grandson of [[Martin A. McNary]] and Betsey Cary.

His marker there is inscribed with his wife's name and date of birth, but does not show her date of death.
