He lived his entire life in Berne, and was devoted to agriculture.<ref name="Reynolds"/>

Stephen died on December 14, 1832 in Berne. He was buried in his family burial ground in Berne. Helen died on April 3, 1855 in East Berne and was buried beside her husband.
