Solomon was born Nov. 14, 1799, the son of Coenradt Hotaling and Jennetje Bogardus .<ref name="Kassak">Descendents of Mathys Coenradsen Hooghteeling, compiled by Marian and Joseph Kassak</ref>

Solomon was a farmer in Berne and in Wisconsin.<ref name="Kassak"/>
