==Life==
John was born in 1840, in 1850 he was living with his parents, older brother William and older sister Amanda in New Scotland, Albany County, NY.<ref name="1850Census"/> His father Isaac died within the next decade and in 1860 John was recorded in the US Census twice.<ref name="1860Census"/> The first time he was recorded living in Westerlo with his widowed mother Sarah and sister Amanda, and was recorded as working as a farm laborer.<ref name="1860Census"/> The second time he was recorded as living in Westerlo with the family of [[George Wheeler]], who was a farmer and working as a farm laborer.<ref name="1860Census"/> His sister Amanda was also recorded two times. On October 15, 1862 John enlisted in Company H of the 177th NY Infantry with his brother William. They served together until they both mustered out on September 10, 1863. During their service, John was shot in the face and William was shot in the right leg, but both survived and returned to Westerlo where they would live for the remainder of their lives.<ref name="1890Census"/><ref name="USCensus">US Censuses</ref> After the war on July 4, 1866 in Dormansville, John married Sara M. White (B. April 1845, D. Nov 10, 1916).<ref name="Ancestry">www.ancestry.com</ref> They were recorded in the 1870 with their young son John, living in Westerlo where John was working as a day laborer.<ref name="1870Census"/> By the 1880 US Census, their family had grown to include their daughter Ida Jane.<ref name="1880Census"/> John was working as a laborer.<ref name="1880Census"/> On August 5, 1889, John filed for an invalid pension based on his Civil War service. In 1890, John and his brother William were both recorded in the US Veterans Census living in Westerlo. In that record John recorded that he had been shot in the face. The 1900 US Census recorded John as a farmer who owned his own farm.<ref name="1900Census"/> John and Sarah were living alone.<ref name="1900Census"/>

John was said to have dark hair and grey eyes.<ref name="Ancestry"/>

==Death==
On October 23, 1902, John died.<ref name="Ancestry">www.ancestry.com</ref> After his death, his wife Sarah would file for his Civil War Pension.<ref name="Pension"/> John was only sixty two years of age.
