F. H. Filkins, Formerly Of East Berne, Dies

On February 5, 1936 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Schuler in Schenectady, Fred H. Filkins entered into rest, aged 75 years.

Born on Filkins Hill, the only son of Hiram Filkins and his wife, Susanah Deitz, most of his life was spent on the country-side associated for generations with the family name. Early in his married life the death of his wife left him with, six young children, and with them he returned to the family home. His devoted care of his motherless family was ably seconded by the loving tenderness of his own parents. With the passing of the years the sons and daughters established homes of their own, and only the youngest daughter remained with her father and aged grandmother. Some twenty-five years ago, Mr. Filkins purchased a home in East Berne, where he removed with his mother and daughter. For many years blind and helpless, Mrs. Filkins was ever the object of the most- solicitous and devoted attention from her son and granddaughter. After her death in 1917, only two remaianed in the family, and an unusual bond of affectionate sympathy existed between the father and daughter. For years in failing health, Mr. Filkins received in turn the faithful and loving service he had so constantly given.

A member of the Lutheran church at East Berne, and one of its most loyal supporters, he will be greatly missed in that place. A man of Christian training and character, his life was a witness for the faith he professed. The funeral services was held at the church on Friday, and the Rev. H. M. Mohr of Schenectady officiated. Burial was at South Berne cemetery.

He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Henry Schuler of Schenectady and Mrs. Alice Rendeau of Albany; three sons, A. J. Filkins, of Schenectady, Luther Filkins of Highlands, and F. H. Filkins of South Berne, also ten grand children, and two great grandchildren. These have the sincere sympathy of many friends in their home communities.

Do You Remember?

Do you remember when the hill south of East Berne, known as Filkins Hill, was occupied by the Filkins Clan? The area between Cole Hill road and the Ford Schoolhouse road was a solid Filkins population, with farmers of other names around the edges. There were occasional family of another name, such as the late William Skinner, who had married a Filkins daughter Etta, and lived on the hill through his life. Their daughter Nettie, the widow of Hazael Filkins, is now a teacher in Berne-Knox school. Another daughter, Minnie, is Mrs. Carey Strevell of Westerlo, and their youngest daughter Leonie is Mrs. Harold Gallup of Sufferen, N. Y. Two sons are deceased and Harold, another son, I think lives in Delmar.

At the turn of the century those living on the hill, one next to the other, wre Charles O., CHarles, E., Old Hi (Hiram, Little Hi) whose daughter, Mrs. Joseph McCann, and family now occupy the old homestead.); Frank Morgan, Old George, Little George, Joseph, Edwin Louis, Fred Louis, Chirstopher (who was an intermediary between Colonel Church and the Anti-Renters).

Those are the ones I recall of my own knowledge, and I must have missed some of them.

No picnic was complete without the Filkins Hill Fife and Drum Corps, composed entirely of Filkins talent. Those I recall were Fred, Josie, and Little Hi, and others; there were enough of them so that it one was unable to be present, there were always plenty of "spares." All were most proficient in their art. Two brothers of the family, living where the Remly Bros. no live, had trouble,and one of them shot the other. It did not prove fatal at the time, but resulted in death a few years later.

Several direct descendants of these families are still in and around this area, with none left of the hill.

Fred's daughter, Mrs. Henry Schuler, is still with us and with her family lives in East Berne.

Joseph's surviving daughters are Bertha, Eva (Mrs. Amasa Joslin of Unionville) and Lottie (Mrs. Starkweather of California.) A number of grand and great-grandchildren live in this area.

The late Charles E. Filkins, a carpenter, moved to Albany and was employed in the building of the state Capitol (many years ago). He became an expert wood carver, doing a great deal of the work in finish the Capitol.

I think the facts given here are accurate, but to go into the direct descendants in detail would be an endless task, with errors. It would have to be be a Filkins family historian to get the fact straight and the names of all in, as there are all a great many of them wight in this neck of the woods.
