Isaac Dietz was born on October 12, 1839 to [[Elijah Deitz]] (B. Dec 29, 1818, D. Aug 10, 1869) and [[Nancy Mattice]] (B. Dec 2, 1819, D. Oct 10, 1859).<ref name="Bernehistory">Bernehistory.org</ref> His middle initial has been recorded both as M. and as H. for Henry<ref name="Bernehistory"/> . He was the oldest of six children.<ref name="Bernehistory"/>
