In Memoriam

A startling and unusally sad accident occurred at Peter Devoe'a on the 21st of Sept. when his oldest son, Clarence Devoe was accidentally shot and instantly killed by a gun carried in the hands of Alfred Coons, P. Devoe's hired man. The young man was nearly deranged with horror at what had occurred and be cannot explain how the gun, (which was a hammerless one) came to be discharged. He was not much used to firearms. Clarence, in company with Wagoner Bro's, J. H. and E. P. went to his father's on Friday evening to enjoy a day's hunting on Saturday, intending to return home on Sunday. It was proposed for the party (consisting of Clarence and J. H. and E. P. Wagoner and Avery L. Wright) to go down in the woods on P. Devoe's farm to see if they could get some of a brood of birds that had been seen there, and out of courtesy they invited Coons to accompany them. They had remained away but a short time and had started for the house when the fatal shot was heard, and the horrified friends gathered around their beloved comrade. He was conveyed to the house and words are futile to attempt to portray the depth of anguish that filled the hearts of those present and nearly robbed them of reason.

Wagoner Bro's hastened home to Schenectady to apprise the bereaved wife and friends of the awful calamity that bad befallen them. Wagoner Bro's are crushed beneath the blow but still thankful withal that the shot was not from their hands that deprived the friends of an affectionate and dutiful son and brother, husband and father, and the community of a stirring and energetic local contractor and builder and a highly respected citizen whose loss will be felt wide-spread and far-reaching.

Only God's infinite mercy and compassion can assist weak humanity to bear such a heavy affliction. The bereaved friends have the heartfelt sympathy of all who know them, and several of them are prostrated with grief.
