Alexander was born in Guilderland at about 1804, a son of John Crounse and Elizabeth Livingston<ref name="Hudson and Mohawk Valley Families"> Hudson-Mohawk Genealogical and Family Memoirs: A Record of Achievements of the People of the Hudson and Mohawk Valleys in New York State, Cuyler Reynolds</ref>. His siblings were:
