John Chesbro was born about 1840 in (Greene County, NY)<ref name="1875 Census">1875 Census, Westerlo, Albany Co., NY </ref> Albany, NY.<ref name="Carnival">Keating, Robert, [[Carnival of Blood|Carnival of Blood]]: The Civil War Ordeal of the Seventh New York Heavy Artillery, Published by Butternut and Blue, Baltimore, Md 1998</ref> At this point we do not know his ancestry. His surname is spelled many different ways but Chesbro was the preferred spelling by his grandson [[Clinton John Chesbro]]. John used the alias John Castle while in the Civil War.

Before 1874, he married a woman named Ella who was born in September of 1850.<ref name="USCensus">US Censuses</ref> They had one son [[Lewis Chesbro]] in August 1874.<ref name="USCensus"/>

==Life==
In 1880, John was living in the city of Albany at #8 Central Avenue with his wife Ella and five year old son Lewis in a two family house with the family of Christian Schurr a German grocer.<ref name="1880Census">1880 US Census, Albany, Albany Co, NY</ref> John was working as a driver. A decade later, he was living in Westerlo when the 1890 US Veterans Census was taken.<ref name="1890Census">1890 US Veterans Census, Westerlo, Albany Co, NY</ref> He died just after the census was taken and in 1900 his widow Ella was living in Westerlo with her son Lewis, daughter in law Anna and grandson Clinton John.<ref name="1900Census">1900 US Census, Westerlo, Albany Co, NY</ref> In this census she was recorded as a farmer who owned the farm. Her son Lewis was recorded as a day laborer.

==Death==
John died on October 18, 1890<ref name="Civil War Pension Records"> Civil War Pension Records @ Fold3.com</ref>.His widow, Ella, filed for her pension on Nov 7, 1890.<ref name="Pension">Civil War Pension Index, Ancestry.com</ref> His wife Ella lived for many more years being recorded in the 1900 and 1910 US Censuses in Westerlo.
