==Birth==

George A. Brate was born in about 1844 to [[Henry Brate]] (B. Sept 20, 1803, D. June 11, 1887) and Eliza M. Smith (B. abt 1807, D. after 1880).<ref name="Bernehistory">Bernehistory.org</ref> He was the youngest son of ten children and a brother to Delinton Brate who also served in the Civil War.

==Marriage & Children== 


George married between 1870 and 1875 and was widowed in 1875. His wife, whose name is unknown, gave birth to a daughter Minnie E. Brate in about 1875.<ref name="Bernehistory"/>

Then after 1880, George married Angelica Smith who was born in 1836 in Berne and was the daughter of Asa Smith and Eva Warner].<ref name="Bernehistory"/> Angelica was the widow of Martin Brate Jr. (B. abt 1818, D. after 1880).<ref name="Bernehistory"/>
