William died in the Civil War after having been taken prisoner at [[Cold Harbor|Cold Harbor]] on June 3, 1864 and sent to the Salisbury prison in N.C.<ref name="Heroes"/> The exact date of his death is unknown. Robert Keating in the book [[Carnival of Blood|Carnival of Blood]] says that he was missing in action on June 3, 1864 at Cold harbor and that no further information is available.
