Dewitt worked primarily as a farmer however in 1880 his occupation was recorded as a teamster.<ref name="USCensus">US Censuses</ref>

==Life==
After the Civil War in 1870 Dewitt was working as a farmer and living in Rensselaerville with a large extended family with names including Hagadorn, Moke and Fero. In 1880 he was married to Helen, living with his wife Helen and young son Channing, and working as a teamster.<ref name="1880Census">1880 US Census, , Albany Co, NY</ref> He continued to live in Westerlo in 1890.<ref name="1890Census">1890 US Veterans Census, Westerlo, Albany Co, NY</ref> In 1900 and 1910 he and his wife Helen were living on a farm they owned without a mortgage and he was working as a farmer.<ref name="1900 Census">1900 US Census, Westerlo, Albany Co, NY</ref><ref name="1910Census">1910 US Census, Westerlo, Albany Co, NY</ref>
