John Amasa<ref name="Howell">Howell, George Rogers, [[History of the County of Albany]], NY from 1609-1886, W. W. Munsell & Co., 1886, page 817</ref> Alverson was born on March 1, 1838<ref name="Town and City Registers">Town and City Registers of Men Who Served in the Civil War</ref> to [[Leonard Alverson]] (B. Aug 21, 1808, D. Feb 17, 1874) and [[Elizabeth Wilber]] (B. abt July 22, 1806, D. July 21, 1889). He was one of seven children.
