Christina Alhoff was born on May 9, 1845 in Germany.<ref name="Bernehistory">Bernehistory.org</ref><ref name="Obit">Obituary of Mrs. Charles F. Cary, [[Altamont Enterprise|Altamont Enterprise]] Friday September 22, 1916 page 1</ref> Her maiden name has been also spelled; Alhloff, Alhlof. It appears that she was the daughter of or related to John Ahlof and his wife Catharine who lived in Coeymans Hollow and were recorded in the 1860 US Census there.<ref name="1860Census">1860 US Census, Coeymans, Albany Co, NY</ref>

In about 1867, she married [[Charles F. She attended the Christian Church in Reidsville for most of her life.<ref name="Obit"/> After moving to Voorheesville, she attended Voorheesville Presbyterian Church.<ref name="Obit"/>

==Life==
Christina was born in Germany in 1845.<ref name="Bernehistory"/><ref name="Obit"/> She immigrated to the US in 1850 with her family and they almost immediately settled in Reidsville, Albany County, NY.<ref name="Obit"/> In about 1867 she married [[Charles F. Cary]], a Civil War Soldier who suffered facial and leg wounds.<ref name="Obit"/> They quickly began a family, which would ultimately number two girls and one boy.<ref name="Obit"/> Charles supported the family by working primarily as a stone cutter, however he also apparently recieved a invalid pension as a result of his wounds during the war.<ref name="1870Census"/><ref name="1880Census"/><ref name="Pension">Civil War Pension Index, www.ancestry.com</ref> Her husband died in 1892 in his early 50s.<ref name="Obit"/><ref name="Bernehistory"/> After his death, she filed for his Civil War pension on December 18, 1893.<ref name="Pension">Civil War Pension Index, www.ancestry.com</ref> Christina continued to live in Reidsville with her son Manly, who married Florence Eldridge in 1895.<ref name="Obit"/><ref name="1900Census"/> After the marriage, Christina lived with the young couple and their three children.<ref name="Obit"/><ref name="1910Census">1910 US Census, Westerlo, Albany Co, NY</ref> In April of 1916, Christina moved from Reidsville the only town she had really known to Voorheesville.<ref name="Obit"/> She remained in relatively good health until her death.<ref name="Obit"/>

Christina died 24 years after her husband on September 11, 1916 in Voorheesville, Albany County, NY.<ref name="Obit"/> She was buried in Reidsville.<ref name="Obit"/>

"Mrs. Charles F. Cary, a resident of Reidsville for 65 years, died at her son's home in Voorheesville last Monday, Sept. 11, of apoplexy. As Christina Alhoff, she was born in Germany 71 years ago, coming to this country when five years of age. When twenty she married Mr. Cary, a Civil war Soldier, just returned from the front. He belonged to Co. K 7th New York heavy artillery which saw much service. He was wounded in the face, which caused his death 27 years thereafter, some 24 years ago. Honor to the widows of the old soldiers and unstiated praise for the boys in blue, of which sumber Albany county sent her full quota.
Since her husband's death in 1892, she has resided with her only son, Manly. With him she moved to Voorheesville last April. Besides him, she leaves two daughters Mrs. David P. Warner of Slingerlands and Mrs. Emery Whitbeck of Hartford, Conn.
For more than 45 years she had been a member and one of the most efficient workers of the Christian Church of Reidsville. Death came unexpectedly, but did not find her unprepared.
Her funeral services were held on Thursday morning, Rev. S. M. Adsit of Voorheesville Presbyterian church officiating, assisted by Miss Etta Houck and Mrs. Peter V. Van Wormer in singing two selections dear to the deceased. Burial was in the family plot at Reidsville, Frank Brunk being funeral director.
