In 1870 Thomas was still working as a farmer in Berne at the age of 66.<ref name="1870Census"/>  His youngest daughters Emma and Mary were living with Thomas and Maria as well as their young grandson William Taylor (B. 1861, D. after 1880) who was the son of their daughter [[Lydia Stafford]] Taylor.<ref name="1870Census"/><ref>Marriage Record of Walter Taylor to Ida B.
