The grist mill of David Smith was the first grist mill in [[South Westerlo]]. It was destroyed by flood and fire in 1805 and 1910 respectively but was rebuilt each time. It ceased operation in the 1950's.<ref>"Town of Westerlo Then and Now, Bicentennial Booklet, 1976</ref>
