==Death==
John was killed in battle June 16, 1864 at Petersburg, Va. by being shot through the head.<ref name="Carnival"/>  At the time he and Fred Mather were attempting to bury the regimental flag in the sand to protect it as he and the other men were about to be captured by the Confederates.<ref name="Carnival"/>  When John was killed, Fred Mather was splattered with blood but he managed to finish the burial of the flag before capture.<ref name="Carnival"/>  He was buried on the battle field.<ref name="Heroes of Albany">Clark, Rufus Wheelwright "Heroes of Albany; A Memorial of the Patroit-martyrs of the City and County" 1867</ref><ref name="Adjut-Genl">[[Annual Report of the Adjutant-General|Annual Report of the Adjutant-General]] of the State of New York for the Year 1898 By New York (State).
