William was born in Westerlo, January 10, 1829, a son of George W. Swarthout and Catherine Patrie. Peter Patrie was a native of Holland and an early settler of Westerlo.[1]

William was brought up on the farm[1]

In 1855 George married Catherine,a daughter of John Crawford of Westerlo[1]
They have one son:
- George W., who married Annie Adriance, daughter of George Adriance, a farmer of Westerlo.[1]
