In June 1997, Pauline Williman placed her family’s 162-acre farm, located in the town of Knox in rural Albany County, into the Patroon Land Foundation. The Foundation was constituted to preserve the property as farmland, cultivate the land to grow food to feed the poor and hungry, and educate students about agriculture. From 2001 to 2005, Pauline and her brother, William Salisbury, operated the farm, harvesting over 200,000 pounds of vegetables for those in need. In 2006, the Regional Food Bank assumed the Farm’s management. The Farm provides an ongoing source of fresh, high quality, nutritious produce for the Food Bank and the hungry people it serves.

Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York

The Food Bank works to alleviate hunger and prevent food waste by collecting large donations of wholesome food from the food industry and distributing it to agencies feeding the hungry. The Food Bank provides food to nearly 1,000 member agencies in 23 counties of northeastern New York, distributing approximately 20 million pounds annually.

What Is Community Supported Agriculture?

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a partnership between families and farms. It’s simple! As a member, you make a commitment to support a farm by buying a “share” in the season’s harvest. In return, you receive a weekly supply of fresh, locally-grown produce during the harvest season, as well as the satisfaction of knowing you’re supporting local agriculture. CSA members reap the rewards of abundant harvests, but also share the farm’s risks due to nature’s uncertainties.

Why Is The Patroon Land Farm CSA Unique?

The Patroon Land Farm’s core purpose is to growfood to feed hungry people. CSA members contribute to that mission while enjoying their own share of the Farm’s bounty. The Farm is devoted to growing fresh, nutritious food for the Regional Food Bank and the agencies and hungry people it serves. Revenue from the CSA will enable the Farm to become financially self-sustaining over time. CSA membership also supports the preservation of working farmland in the Capital District area.

How Does The Patroon Land Farm CSA Work?

1. Members sign up to purchase a full or half share by completing the attached fo rm. Fullshares are $400 and half-shares are $250. Shares will be limited to 250 members in 2010.
2. Members receive a weekly supply of fresh produce during the harvest season, approximately early July through mid-October. A full share is designed to feed a family of 3-4 and a halfshare will feed a family of 1-2.
3. Members pick up their weekly shares at the Farm in Knox, the Regional Food Bank in Latham, or another site designated by the Food Bank each Thursday.
4. Members may pick-their-own allotment of certain crops at the Patroon Land Farm in addition to their weekly shares, including string beans, peas, cherry tomatoes, and herbs.
5. Members are encouraged to visit and volunteer at the farm.
