Birth

Isaac Winston was born on April 22, 1758 at Farmington, CT, a son of Abraham Winston and Lorena Cogswell. His known siblings:

  • Abraham Winston born 1748
  • Joseph Winston born 1750
  • Jacob Winston born 1753

Isaac continued to reside at the place of his birth until he was about 15 years old when his family moved to Richmond in Berkshire County, MA.

Military

Isaac enlisted as a private in Captain Moses Ashley’s Company, Colonel Patterson’s Massachusetts Regiment at Richmond, Berkshire Co., MA in the Fall of 1775. He was in the battles of The Cedars of Trenton and Princeton, NJ where he was taken prisoner, marched to New York and released after about nine days but taken again and held for a little over a year. He was released and returned home at about 1778.


Marriage & Children

After his service, Isaac moved to Stephentown, Rennselaer Co., NY When, where and to whom his first marriage took place is not known, but based on his will, his children from that marriage were:

  • Sally Winston
  • Hulda Winston
  • Abraham Winston born about 1785 in Massachusetts
  • David Winston born in 1781 in Massachusetts
  • Lewis Winston
  • Isaac Winston
  • Harvey Winston born in 1792 in Westerlo
  • John Winston
  • Reuben Winston

On September 25, 1823, in Westerlo, he married his second wife, Hannah Clark, the widow of John Ten Eyck. She had nine children from her previous marriage. There were no children of this marriage.

Death

In the Fall of 1835 Isaac went by ship on a business trip to New York City. On his way back home he fell overboard and drowned. Papers that he had in possession were later found floating in the river.

Hannah died on June 30, 1862
