Birth

Dewitt C. Bates was born on July 1, 1845 in Broome, Schoharie County, a son of Solva Bates and Violetta Goodfellow.[1]

Marriage & Children

Before 1880, he married a woman named Helen, who was several years older than he, having been born in March of 1842.[2][3] They had a son named Channing Bates in about 1877.[4]

Occupation

Dewitt worked primarily as a farmer however in 1880 his occupation was recorded as a teamster.[2]

Life

After the Civil War in 1870 Dewitt was working as a farmer and living in Rensselaerville with a large extended family with names including Hagadorn, Moke and Fero. In 1880 he was married to Helen, living with his wife Helen and young son Channing, and working as a teamster.[4] He continued to live in Westerlo in 1890.[5] In 1900 and 1910 he and his wife Helen were living on a farm they owned without a mortgage and he was working as a farmer.[3][6]

Death

Dewitt died on January 22, 1917 at South Westerlo.[7]
