Charles Mulford Niles was born on September 17, 1840[1] in Rensselaerville, Albany County, NY,a son of John Niles and Polly Cook[2] (John Niles and Polly Cook are buried at the Rensselaerville Cemetery).

Charles married at Fort Scott, Kansas on August 22, 1873, Mary Haley an Irish immigrant who was born on September 29, 1849, in County Cork. They had the following known children:

Robert Keating in Carnival of Blood says that Charles mustered in as a Second Lieutenant in Company I on August 12, 1862."Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant August 12th 1863 assigned to Company I; 1st Lieutenant April 24th 1864 assigned to Company A; Captain Oct 23 1864 assigned to Company L. Participated in the engagements of Regiment beginning the Charge Upon the Line - Deep Bottom (Oct. 27, 1861), Fredericksburg Road (May 19, 1864), Milford Station (May 19, 1864), North Anna River, Totopotomoy Creek (May 30, 1864), Cold Harbor (June 3, 1864), Petersburg (June 16 and 22, 1864). His service experience was recorded by Charles Mulford Niles.
