Death of Mrs. William Cassidy
The news of the death of Mrs. William Cassidy, which occurred at Ste. Agathe des Moutes, Canada, on Thursday morning, Oct. 16, came as a shook to the people of this vicinity, as she only left the village a few days previous and was apparently in her usual health.
Mrs. Cassidy was one of the first Albanians to establish a summer home, adjacent to the village, and every summer found her here, one of the first to arrive and the last to return. She seemed to have a more personal Interest in the village than the other resident Albanians, by reason of the Catholic chapel which she built here in 1888, in which she took a deep interest.
We clip the following from the Albany Evening Journal of Monday :
"The funeral of Mrs. William Cassidy took place from St. Mary's church this morning at 9:30 o'clock. The Rev. Father Dillion celebrated high mass. The Rev. Father Alphones acted as deacon and the Rev. Father D. F. Curtin acted as sub-deacon. The Rev. Dr. Burtsell was also present. It was quite appropriate to have the funeral mass celebrated at St. Mary's, for in James Cassidy's house in 1792, one of the first efforts to establish a Catholic chapel (which resulted in one in 1797) was made. James Cassidy's son John, laid the corner stone of the second St. Mary's church in 1828, and his son, William Cassidy, editor of the "Atlas and Argus," was one of the conspicuous man of his day and always a resident of the parish. To-day William Cassidy's widow was buried from the church which, is so intimately associated with the family. The interment was made in the family vault at St. Agnes's cemetery."
